Classified by the Region of Tuscany as one of the “Historic theaters of Tuscany to be protected,” the Municipal Theater of Antella was founded in the late 1800s thanks to the will of the local people. From the outset, however, it was witness to the troubled vicissitudes that affected not only this small town, but the whole of Italy as well.
The history of the theater ran across two parallel tracks. The theater is a place of culture and meeting, hosting events for young companies and groups both from Antella and outside of the city and colorful carnival balls. One cannot forget the famous Cartolinata: a dance competition – that includes dances such as the waltz, fox trot, tango and scimmir -where the winner was the girl with the most cards. On the other hand, the theater was also witness to the various clashes between the socialists and the monarchists, and in fact from 1921 was the home of the Casa del Fascio. In 1974 the structure became the property of the City. In 1999 restoration work was started on the building that restored its excellent acoustics and original Art Nouveau beauty that had been lost over time. Particularly notable are the geometrically patterned terracotta floors, the glass door in the atrium decorated with wood carvings and the floral crest of Antella and the U shaped gallery with beautiful wrought-iron railings. Another unique element of the theater is its double internal and external parterre, both overlooking the stage.
Since 2003, under the direction of Riccardo Massai, the theater has been becoming a center for original productions, promoting a new generation of young actors.
